Excursions from Mussoorie

The backbone of Mussoorie is the Mall, where cars are not allowed during the peak tourist season. The Library is to the west, while Kulri to the east is main transport centre. The Kulri Bazaar is stocked with shops selling souvenirs, video game arcades and India’s largest indoor skating rink.

Kempty Falls
15km on the Chakrata road, from Mussoorie is Kempty Falls. At an altitude of 4300 ft located in a beautiful valley and surrounded by high mountains, it is the biggest & prettiest.

Children as well as adults enjoy bathing at the foot of the falls. It is also a very popular picnic spot.

  Camels Back Road

It starts from Kulri and ends at the library covering a total distance of about 3 km. It is a pleasant walk or horse ride with a camels rock enroute (a life like resemblance). Sunset view of the Himalayas is superb.

  Children’s Lodge

Children’s Lodge, the highest point in the area, is 5 km's from the Tourist Office. Reached by foot or on ponies, the summit offers great views of snow peaks. Alternatively, Camel’s Back road, a 3-km road encircling the base of Gun Hill is also a good place to view the breathtaking Himalayan sunset.

Named after a nearby rock formation that looks like a camel’s back, a walk or pony ride along this road yields the sights of snow mountains. 8 km's from the center of town is the house where Sir George Everest, the first Surveyor General of India lived and worked.

Mussoorie Lake
6 km before Mussoorie, this is a newly developed picnic spot on Dehradun Mussoorie road. It is a delightful spot.

Paddle boats are available. It commands an enchanting view of Doon Valley & the nearby villages.

  Clouds End

The bungalow built in 1838 by a British Major was one of the first four buildings of Mussoorie. The bungalow has since then been converted into a hotel called Clouds End, and is situated at the extreme west of Mussoorie Hill, 8 km from library. The resort is surrounded by thick forest, offers a wide variety of flora & fauna besides a panoramic view of snow clad Himalayas & Yamuna river.

  Tibetan Temple

This temple is located in Happy valley area of Mussoorie which is 3 km's west of the Library. Marked by the Tchechencholing gompa overlooking the Doon valley, the settlement also includes a school and some shops selling Tibetan handicraft items.

The Bhadraj temple , dedicated to the elder brother of Lord Krishna (incarnation of Vishnu), is worth visiting for its views of the Doon valley and Chakrata range.

  Lake Mist

This place is seven kilometers on way to Kempty. Lake mist offers a perfect resting place for tired and weary tourists. One has to pay Rs. 25 to enter Lake mist. There are good accommodation facilities here.

Gun Hill   k
Gun Hill, a curious flat-topped hill is the second highest peak of Mussoorie. You can reach it on foot or on a pony by a bridle path from the Mall. Alternatively a 400 meter ropeway takes you up to the hilltop on a scintillating journey with great views.

From the hilltop you get to see some of the more prominent peaks including Banderpunch, Srikanth, Pithwara and the Gangotri group. In colonial times, a gun placed on the summit used to fire at mid-day for locals to adjust their watches.
